Frequently Asked Questions

This page lists some frequently asked questions and their answers.

How does the system operate?
Members of The Last Messages Club can create, amend and delete email-like messages and attachments at any time during their lifetime. Their messages are held in complete confidence and only mailed once the member’s death has been confirmed through a simple message sending process.

The process is carefully designed to be safe and secure and avoid any danger of messages being sent prematurely or in error. The member nominates three Advisors; these might be family members, close friends, legal or other professional individuals or organisations. These Advisors are made aware of their role and responsibilities. The member ensures that these Advisors are advised of their death.

Messages are not simply transmitted as this might be shocking or upsetting to their recipients. Messages are sent in a cautious and compassionate manner.

Firstly emails are sent by the club, on the member’s behalf, advising the recipients that a message awaits them. It is clear to message recipients that they are under no pressure to read the mail. They may choose to read the message through a link or by requesting transmission of the original message and any attachments. They can only read the messages sent to them personally and only those they choose to open.

The whole system is designed to be safe and secure and minimise risk of malicious use or error.

What happens if I don’t maintain my annual subscription?
Your Last Messages continue to be stored and may be sent through the message sending process regardless of your continued subscription. However Silver members who allow their annual subscription to lapse will be unable to update, amend, delete or add messages. The Last Messages Club will remind you annually about your membership and subscriptions can be renewed at any time.

How can I be sure my messages will not be sent prematurely?
This explains the Last Messages sending process, a process designed to ensure that Last Messages are only sent at the correct time.

Any one of a member's advisors may log in and start the message delivery process. This causes an email to be sent to the member and to all advisors. In addition, mobile phone text (SMS) messages are sent if mobile phone numbers are available.

A "cancellation window" allows for correction of a misunderstanding or mistake by any of the advisors or the member. This period can be set by the member from 3 to 30 days. After expiry of the "cancellation window" the messages are sent only if at least two advisors have confirmed the instruction and assuming neither the member nor any advisor has objected.

What if I forget all about the club?
The Last Messages Club will email you at a frequency you have chosen to maintain contact and remind you about your messages. If we do not hear back from you despite reminders we will email your advisors telling them about this lack of response.

What happens if someone triggers the message sending in error?
It is possible for a advisor to start the message sending process due to a misunderstanding or for someone to do so maliciously. However, as the process relies on confirmation from the other advisors and includes a check with the member, the message sending process would be quickly countermanded long before the messages are sent. No messages have been sent in error by The Last Messages Club.

Could I use a lawyer to store my messages?
Lawyers are generally only willing to store documents with the Last Will and Testament of a client who is very well known to them. You may be able to find a solicitor who will perform this service but you will find it much less convenient and expensive to add, delete or change your messages in this way.

Couldn't I store some documents with a friend or in a desk drawer?
You could do this but you will run the risks that someone might access your messages either deliberately or accidentally during your life and that they may get forgotten after your death. You can only access messages stored in one location from that place. You can access your Last Messages from anywhere in the world with an Internet connection.
